Have you ever been watching TV and seen one of those classic movie scenes where there is large crowd packed into an amazing jazz/blues club – amazing live music, beautiful people (with an abundance of personality), dressed in their best, with dancing and drinks all around?
Have you ever wondered why “you” have never found a place like that in Richmond? These movie scenes always seem to be set in a place like Harlem, Detroit or New Orleans. They never seem to be anywhere near Richmond, nor do they seem relevant to your life in 2013. I’m I right?
Well, what if I told you a place like the one described above does exist. And yes, it’s right here in RVA. Last Saturday, I attended my very first Saturday Soul Social hosted by Jarrard Anthony with DJ R Simms and featuring Zo! of Foreign Exchange music fame, along with Deborah Bond and Aaron Abernathy. Leading the night off was the fabulous songstress LaVeda.

Saturday Soul Social takes place every 1st Saturday of the month at the Speakeasy Lounge (right beside the historic Hippodrome in Jackson Ward). And to feature an artist as talented and prolific as Zo! was a major win for the event. With a solid focus on independent soul music – Saturday Soul Social really is for grown folks. A major aspect of the night that I really enjoyed was seeing so many people dressed up for a night on the town. There were no white tees – no jeans with holes in them. The crowd really took pride in dressing up and throwing down.
The Cheats Movement Blog had a lot of family in the building as well. My friends Lorna and Nadira were looking beautiful.
The amazing songstress LaVeda led off the night.
Zo! played tracks from his new album, “ManMade” which is currently available in stores and on itunes.
