1. THE MUSIC: I’m not going to act like I don’t have at least two Matisyahu CDs…I do (Live at Stubb’s and Youth). I know it was 2005 & 2006 but at one time Matisyahu was selling-out show all over – well, at least in NYC. I’m a fan and am looking forward to his performance Saturday night 7:45 PM. Also, The London Souls are dope! I’ve followed them for a while since they were all over Creative Control. They are on stage Saturday night at 6:15 PM. Noah-O will be holding down an early show on Saturday (1:00 PM). He is one of my favorite RVA-based hip-hop artists. His performance will be worth hitting Brown’s Island early on Saturday. On Sunday, Butcher Brown hits the stage at 1:00 PM. I’m a huge fan of their music. All of these shows and many more a FREE so it’s worth checking out and supporting.
2. PHOTO-HEAVEN: If you are a photographer or a fan of taking photos then you should be at Riverrock! The photography opportunities are amazing. Between Freestyle Biking, Air Dogs, Slackline, Music and let’s not forget the people, photographers can shoot it all in one place. Also there are 2 photography contests this year (RTD/Outdoor Magazine & Instagram). Check them out at the Riverrock website.
3. THE COMPETITION: With all that’s going on at Riverrock it’s easy to forget that there’s serious competition going on. I’ve covered these competitive events the last two years and it’s very exciting to see familiar faces competing in events like slack lining, Freestyle Biking, and Bouldering. Over the last few years there have been a few competitors from RVA and it’s always great to cheer them on.
4. SEEING SOMETHING NEW: No matter how many times you’ve been to Riverrock, I guarantee that you will see something new every time. This is a great festival for our city and really embraces the outside the box spirit our community.
Make sure you take some time this weekend to visit to Brown’s Island.
