This week, I continue my series highlighting the members of the Satellite Syndicate. The Syndicate is a collection of artists who are pushing music to new boundaries in 2015. A beat collective, that’s here in RVA and stretches across the country. Both digital and in your face, the Syndicate is growing a strong fan base in RVA and online.

Today let’s meet Christopher Allen Conrad Tait AKA Ozark. #WESEEIT Name:

Christopher Allen Conrad Tait. I make beats as OZARK.

Hometown:

I was born in Fairfax, VA and raised in neighboring Alexandria, but a lot of formative time in my youth & teenage years was spent exploring around Washington D.C.  riding the metro, going to museums, shows at 9:30 and Black Cat, the US Botanic Garden and numerous record stores.

Weapon of choice:

Roland SP-404, audacity, vinyl, youtube, .wavs, my ears, and a Marantz PMD221 portable cassette recorder. I started off using a 202 this past July until it died, it was an incredibly rudimentary sampler, and I think it instilled something permanent within my beat making psyche although I’m not exactly sure what.

What role do you play in the Syndicate?

Mostly make tunes and collab with the other guys in various side projects. I also enjoy doing design and illustration work for fun, especially tape design, so I guess the ultimate goal is to channel that back into the group to establish the Syndicate as a beat label done right.

First thing you do in the morning?

Drink water, pet my cat Biko, and listen to NPR. And then probably laugh out loud at something somebody in the group chat has said. Favorite place to make music? Probably at my desk with the SP at home vibing out way too hard with headphones on, but jamming with the homies, wherever that may be, is second to none in my opinion.

First movie you ever called your favorite?

Dunston Checks In. Google it. If you don’t know, now you know.

Your favorite sample?

A loop that makes you feel like you’re at cocktail party on the Moon in 1963. Probably has vibes or a wurli.

Name 3 albums that define your attitude?

-Flying Lotus – Raw Cartoons

Aphex Twin

– Selected Ambient Works 85-92 -Deerhunter- Halcyon Digest

Most played out slang word used in RVA?

The verbalization of hashtag.

3 AM…where you eating?

Catch me outside of Christian’s pizza with a water cup.

If you could Quincy Jones – DJ Khaled any record you wanted – who would play on it?

I’d say Sonny Rollins on sax, Nels Cline and Thurston Moore on guitars, Levon Helm on drums, Stelvio Cipriani on keys, Andreas Vollenweider on harp, and Jaco Pastorius on bass.

One night in any town in the world…where do I find you?

There are no two places in the world I want to go to more than Marseille or Tokyo. So either of those and I’d be in heaven.
