Richmond, VA – With August Alsina, Migos and Future dominating the hip-hop and urban contemporary airways owned by Radio One, it was assumed that it would have been those performances that fans would be talking about at the conclusion of Stone Soul 2015. Yet it was the return of two mid-90’s legends that stole the show and left a lasting impression on the jam-packed crowd at Richmond’s International Raceway Amphitheater Saturday night. The First Lady of Bad Boy records Faith Evans and the triumphant return of Jodeci were the lead topics of conversation as fans exited the nearly 9 hour concert.
Faith Evans hit the stage just after 4:00 PM wearing a white tank and multi-colored summer skirt. She welcomed the Richmond crowd and proceeded to crank out her mass amount of hit records like, “All Night Long” and “You Used to Love Me.” Just the appearance of Faith delighted the Richmond crowd; several fans stating that they hadn’t seen her perform live in many years.
The return of Jodeci was the topic of much speculation leading into Stone Soul 2015. What could have been seen as a large gamble, paid off immediately when K-Ci, JoJo, Mr. Dalvin, and DeVante took the stage. There was no stage-rust as they sung hit records from the 90’s like, “Come and Talk to Me” and “Feenin.” They eventually moved into their new album, featuring “Every Moment.” Jodeci performed a 60 minute set with energy of 1995. As Jodeci embarks on their first tour in 20 years, the long wait for their loyal will be rewarded in many cities.
Both August Alsina and Future caused hysteria, electrifying younger fans. Upstart artists Anthony Lewis and TK & Cash won over fans that may not have been familiar with their music. And Washington DC Go-Go legends Rare Essence, featuring the iconic voice of DK Kool, registered one of the best performances of the day, performing classics like “Overnight Scenario” and “Let Me Clear My Throat.”
Feel-good R&B music won the day at Stone Soul 2015. While modern-day radio stations are under constant criticism for the music that they play, Stone Soul brought the classic feel to the audience by turning back the clock.
