JOHN CANADA “IT’S OK” FT. JOHNNY CIGGS & REKS IS ’90S FEEL PERFECT [IS IT TOO EARLY FOR A POTENTIAL VIDEO OF THE YEAR?]

Is it too early for a video of the year nomination? Probably so, but John Canada’s “It’ OK” featuring Johnny Ciggs and Reks is undeniably one of my favorite videos of early 2017. It not often that I hear a song or see a video and it immediately takes me to a completely different era. For real music lovers and especially writers, that nostalgic vibe is rare because we hear so much music. Last year, the Apollo Brown X Skyzoo project – some Conway and WESTSIDEGUNN,  the Smoke Dza X Pete Rock project and a few others really bought back a feel of 93 to 99. That time period is when you had true east coast lyrics with not a lot of flash (except for bad boy back then) and a gritty feel of authenticity. Basically you believed the artists and you believed the music. That’s what this video is. It helps that I know the crew over at Gritty City and I know that hip-hop is their lives. And if you’re unfamiliar with Reks from Dorchester, MA, you’re missing out on a real one. This track and video is a testament to their authenticity and a dope tribute to what Richmond artists can do. I see you Gritty City. #WESEEIT
