It’s here! The monument to Richmond’s own Maggie L. Walker was unveiled this morning at W. Broad Street and Adams in Jackson Ward. The large crowd battled the heat to see the monument that took about 20 years to come to fruition. In his speech, Mayor Stoney said this is now his favorite statue in Richmond. On hand were members of Walker’s family, the artist Antonio “Toby” Mendez, the aforementioned Mayor Stoney, and his predecessor Mayor Dwight C. Jones.
One of the most applauded members of the ceremony was Melvin Jones, Jr. an advocate that has been fighting for this monument since the very beginning. It was a hot morning in Richmond, but a historic one indeed. #WESEEIT
