MADELINE ROBERTS ON RVA’S COMMUNITY (2013)

Community to me, means the common good. People sharing resources fairly and with consideration of the common good makes for community. Community can involve abstract things like thoughts, ideas and theories as well as literal things and actions, such as saving water, picking up litter (even if it is not yours), and protecting and conserving our environment (not polluting the air with toxins, loud music). I think Dumas (1844) said it best through his character (d’Artagnan) from The Three Musketeers: “All for one and one for all.” To me, that’s community. – Madeline Roberts, VCU School of Social Work
