MEET DJ BANGA: WHAT’S NOW IS NEXT

Several years ago, I was in the old Charged Up Studio (on West Broad Street) hanging out with Noah-O and DJ Banga walked in to pick up a few things and drop off a brand new mixtape. As soon as Banga left, Noah looked at me and asked, “Do you know who that was?” I said, “No.” He then responded, “Yo, that’s DJ Banga. He’s a bit of a legend around here. His mixtapes ring out strong.” Since then, I’ve always been on the lookout for Banga, and Noah was, of course, right. Banga’s mixtapes were a staple for years up and down the east coast, highlighting artists from all over but he had a special love for his hometown. DJ Banga now leads the Dumpoffdjs, a marketing and production house. I recently caught up with him to find out what’s now and what’s next.

Hometown: Richmond, VA

People know you for? Everything: music, djing, mixtapes, production, producing and creating projects. Everything in music.

Years in the game? I would say 9 years professionally.

Explain Dump Off DJs? Dumpoffdjs is a collective group of DJs founded by me and my partner DJ Play, that we established in Richmond.
We started out swapping exclusive songs and highlighting new artists and grew to breaking underground artists to the mainstream. We pride ourselves in “Dumping Off” new music, promo, marketing, and other business activities. Think of Dumpoffdjs as a “DreamTeam” lawyer firm.

What do you want people to know about mixtapes? Mixtapes are, and will always be, one of the most effective ways to break an artist or a song.

The greatest combination of artists you ever put on a mixtape? That’s a very hard question..but I gotta say Nickelus F and Drake.

What is your business priority now? For Dumpoffdjs to continue to expand the business, the production and marketing, break more artists, add new clients, get more label accounts. Gradually add management to our services.

What is your goal in music? My goal is to break as many independent and underrated artists as possible and leave that Dumpoff fingerprint on the game.

One thing you can’t leave home without? My gun! lol nah, Cheats, my phone. for real.

Biggest misconception about you? The biggest misconception about me is that I only like trap music. I’m a music connoisseur, my playlist will surprise people.

Biggest misconception about Richmond? The biggest misconception about Richmond is you gotta move to make it. The earth’s my turf but RVA will always be my office (lol).

You’ve made a mark in the city, name a person that paved the way for you? I would give a salute to All the DJs before me because they showed me what the game was missing, but I would have to give a special S/O to Dj Sir Rj!
