“THE BLACK WOMAN IS GOD” COLE HICKS STUNS IN AMAZING BREWER’S SESSION

I am a Cole Hicks super-fan. I’ve been one for years now.

Every time I hear Cole grab a mic she stops me in my tracks. And I’m not alone. Her wordplay is captivating. Her delivery is nearly flawless. Her presence stands out in a crowd. Whatever the “it factor” is, Cole has it. Her Brewer’s Session performance further proves my point. Be prepared to be enriched for 12 minutes.

I emailed Cole about her approach to this opportunity and what she wanted to convey. She let me know, “There’s a lot going on in every single aspect of every single universal element in this day and time. I wanted the audience to hear it from a black woman’s perspective,” she wrote. She went on to write, “There are so many of us with different perspectives and experiences but so few of us that actually talk about it. Nothing against our men, but there’s always a man speaking for a woman in this particular realm.” Hicks concluded to say, “I wanted them to see that we do exist. And we have our own words.”

Cole proves her point in the just over 12-minute, tiny-desk style, performance that features the songs, “Southside” and “Boss Dreams.” Richmond hip-hop has a plethora of talented MCs, a few stars, and a few stars-in-the-making. Hicks represents the talent and the rising star-power of the Cap City, just asked Sway (from the legendary Sway in the Morning show). #HESEEIT
