WATCH THIS: REGINA KING’S ‘ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI’ IS ON AMAZON PRIME STARTING TODAY

I’ve been looking forward to watching Regina King’s “One Night in Miami” since I saw a trailer on Clayton Davis (@AwardsCircuit) Twitter feed. I was floored.

Over the last decade, I’ve become a low-key Muhammad Ali historian. His life is fascinating. Unconsciously, I’ve collected an in-depth collection of books on Ali’s life (David Remnick’s King of the World probably being the best). I became infatuated with the work of Ali’s long-time photographer Howard Bingham, and the time that Gordon Parks spent documenting Ali. I watch “When We Were Kings” (sports greatest documentary) at least twice a year, and it gets better every time. Ali’s relationship with El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (formally Malcolm X) is one of the most compelling relationships ever documented. And it’s one of the reasons I can’t wait to watch this movie today, even though the movie is fiction.

The movie tells the story of a meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke in a Miami hotel room in February 1964, celebrating Ali’s surprise title win over Sonny Liston. It is the directorial debut for Academy Award-winning actress (and all-around Black Excellence) Regina King.

Since I haven’t seen the movie, I cannot provide a proper review. But I encourage anyone who has even a slight interest in the lives of these amazing pillars in Black American history to give it a watch this weekend.

Once you watch the movie, leave a comment and let me know what you think. I may even host a Zoom discussion on this movie next week. #WESEEIT
