A VISUAL ESSAY: PHOTOGRAPHER WENDY GOODMAN HUMBLE CAPTURES RICHMOND’S SUMMER OF PROTEST

As we turn the corner of 2020 into a new year, we must not forget the call for change that took place over the summer. Photographer Wendy Goodman Humble lives one block away from Marcus-David Peters Circle and spent the summer documenting Richmond’s call for change.

“With the anticipation of a new year comes a reflection of what we’ve experienced in the past year. We felt so many profound shifts in life as we knew it. One of the most significant turning points of 2020 was the protests that happened around the world, in our country, and here in Richmond. Events that unfolded daily throughout the summer, including one block from our home. I am sharing what I consider to be just a small collection of my year in pictures from the Richmond protests, and the resulting call for change. A visual essay, an effort to archive these events through my photography practice, and also to contribute a personal perspective that so many others also captured in their own extraordinary way. Special thanks to local artists RADIO B and SHAWN TRAPP for permission to use their music. And thank you to C Lifson who was instrumental in his video editing assistance.”
