EVERYTHING WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FAN RAN’S ‘WILD ORCHID’ VIDEO
Gritty City Records’ super-producer and MC Fan Ran capped off a superb 2019 with the release of “Wild Orchid,” a gritty, yet artistic, 1 minute and 49-second capsule that highlights his production and underrated rhyme flow. It’s a hypnotize video that I found myself playing about 5 times in a row before I realized what was happening. Once I snapped out of the trance, I was able to dig a little deeper and find out more about this amazing piece of work.
- The video, shot and directed by Unlucky Bastards and edited by Toby Bluntz, was filmed in Rushmere, VA, about 80 minutes southeast of Richmond.
- “Wild Orchid” was filmed at Fan Ran’s Pop’s place, the father and son have been spending a lot of time there over the last year and wanted to document that time and place through music.
- The single is not yet part of any project but may land on Fan Ran’s next solo project.
- The Rushmere location fits the tone and essence of the track. The land, located on the largest part of the James River, is mostly untouched by modern influence. Ran felt that the scene matched the grittiness and beauty of the song.
- Fan Ran is standing with his dad at the end of the video.
- The car in the background of the father/son frame is a Dodge Challenger. Ran says of his father, “he loves that car more than life itself.”
- Despite the Korver/Horford rhyme scheme, Fan Ran is a die-hard Bulls fan. His mom went to UNC so Air Jordan was religion in his home growing up.
- “Wild Orchid” caps off a year in which Fan Ran released a ton of work including Dirty Rice 2 with Noah-O and Pyrex Don with Rah Scrilla.
