QUINCY X’S “KNOTZ” IS THE BRAGGADOCIOUS BOP YOU NEED TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR

I was first introduced to Smyth Knight from our mutual RVA Rap Elite circles and met the young gunna Quincy X during a Knight profile interview at the ICA. At the time, the Kidz at Play Movement had already formed, but a lot of their plans were in development. I could tell right away that these young creatives had dope ideas, and, more importantly, they were a self-contained unit; they were doing everything in-house. Think of Kidz at Play in the same format as early A$AP Mob or Brockhampton. I was instantly impressed with their creativity and their way of looking at brand.

Fast-forward to today and plans are starting to become realities. Knight’s North Chesterfield album is a low-key gem of 2020 and now we get a look at “KNOTZ”, directed by Heriberto Solis (@h3rizz), Dylan Smyth (Knight), & Jacob Parra Mena (@jacob.parramena).

Quincy describes the video as a “braggadocious bop, with serious undertones.” What stands out to me is the authenticity of the moment. Hip-hop, even in 2020, can have artists out of character – chasing an identity that is not fully them. This song (and video) appears to be a good representation of who Quincy X is as an artist, at this time. And the wordplay does fit perfectly with the bop. #WESEEIT
