#WESEEIT DAILY: JUNE 28, 2018 – NO MORE JUSTICE “KENNEDY”, JUSTICE FOR HEATHER HEYER, BOXING’S MEGA FIGHT IS OFF (FOR NOW), RVA HAS STYLE AND SPIRITS
Happy Thursday Family! I’m going to make this as quick as possible, here is what’s on my mind today.
“What we gonna do now? It’s all f*cked up now,” said Puff Daddy at the end of the underrated classic song “Victory.” That’s how I felt when the news hit that Justice Anthony Kennedy, 81, announced he is retiring from the Supreme Court effective July 31. With this move, Trump could possibly reshape the highest court in the land for decades and push some views that I think are setbacks for the country and downright terrifying for women’s rights, gay Americans and same-sex couples. Kennedy is a moderate voice on the court and has been one for decades. Moderate doesn’t mean progressive but it seems he did use some form of common sense more than a few times with his rulings. This is a tough blow to take but we do have to face the facts that the man is 81 years old and has been on the Supreme Court for 30 years. If I’m over 80 and have worked at Burger King for the last 30 years…you best believe I’m going to call it quits one day.
Moving On: James Alex Fields Jr., the man driving the car that killed Heather Heyer at their white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last year was indicted on Wednesday on federal hate crime charges. Prosecutors could be seeking the death penalty. This whole thing makes me sad – then angry – then sad again. I hope there is justice for Heather Heyer and her family.
Moving On: I must admit that since the U.S. is not playing in World Cup – I haven’t watched a game. My social media sources tell me that Germany is out and they were good? Oh well, I think Mexico is still in and Landon Donovan is telling me to root for them.
When it comes to sports I really do care about – the boxing world got news that a potential 2018 bout between Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua is now off. This would have been the biggest heavyweight championship fight in decades. ESPN has the details about why the fight is off for this year but it seems that both camps were not operating in good faith. The only good thing about this is that its boxing and with boxing – money talks – there is too much money for them to leave this fight on the table through 2019.
Moving On: I posted this on my Facebook page yesterday but I want to share it with you. This is the best political ad that I’ve seen in years and it’s one of the reasons we will all know the name Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Finally, a huge shout out to my girl Mecca and the crew over at Style and Spirits RVA. They are celebrating one year tonight. Make sure you check out their event tonight, it’s Native Tounges themed. It’s people like Mecca, and crews like Style and Spirits RVA, that are making Richmond a more relevant destination for culture. And when I say culture, I mean diverse urban culture, diverse hip-hop culture, everyone can’t fit int the same box and Mecca is breaking the mold. #WESEEIT
Until next time, #WESEEIT
