A NIGHT OF #BLACKGIRLMAGIC AT THE CAMEL: COLE HICKS & KENNEKA COOK ARE SET TO DELIVER GREAT PERFORMANCES

I think the trendiness of the hashtag #BlackGirlMagic is often inappropriately used. Don’t get me wrong, black women doing remarkable things should be celebrated and appreciated, and not just with hashtags, because we all know that black women are not celebrated enough.

It’s just the trendiness on social media that sometimes makes me uncomfortable. Serena Williams playing tennis, Rapsody rocking the mic, Queen Beyonce on stage (or doing anything), Auntie Maxine “reclaiming her time,” are true examples of the hashtag, I’ll even give it to your 8-year-old cousins at her dance recital where, let’s just say, she is not Misty Copeland but we are all proud, I get it.

My challenge is that the phrase gets overused so much that when we really see true examples of #BlackGirlMagic – it may get overlooked. I’m predicting that will not be the case this Thursday night at The Camel because there will be a true example of (Richmond) #BlackGirlMagic taking the stage with Kenneka Cook and Cole Hicks.

This will be one of the best live events of the fall. Tickets are on sale right now online: https://www.thecamel.org/event/1741276-cole-hicks-mayday-live-sg-richmond/

Cole Hicks is one of the best MCs I’ve run across in the region – and I’ve seen (and covered) a lot. Her talent radiates from the stage and captivates even the casual hip-hop fan. Kenneka Cook is a compelling artist. She has a range of talent that allows her to go in any musical direction she decides. Her voice is a true instrument.

Come out and support this amazing show Thursday night. Doors open at 8 PM with music starting at 9 PM. Kelli Lemon, speaking of #BlackGirlMagic, will be MCing the night.
